Evil Gets Trashy in this Giallo-Inspired Mystery! “Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh” review!

Before being butchered in the woods of a small town, a frightened young woman, Lexie, sends her estranged Uncle Dominic a letter desperately asking for his help. Plagued by his own dark past and a penchant for being hot tempered, Dominic drags his wild, coked up daughter Kendall to his quaint home town which he had long ago abandoned. Most town folk don’t want Dominic snooping around, investigating a town that faces a sinister murder spree under the unmotivated supervision of a perversive and power hungry eye of the local sheriff. Dominic’s anger rages on, fueled by sheer vengeance, as he searches answers for the cause of his niece’s untimely and gruesome death in which three strips of her flesh were torn from her bloodstained thigh, but the closer he gets to the unbearable truth, those closest to him are swallowed by the town’s harboring unimaginable secret and that’s when Dominic’s true violent calling becomes unleashed upon the unsuspecting locals.

Self-described as a “modern, Midwesternized spin on the Giallo,” Jakob Bilinski’s “Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh” is the writer-director’s comprehensive ode to the multifaceted cult genre. Set on location in Evansville, Indiana, Bilinski unapologetically implores an outrageous white trash horror story that can drop just as many F-bombs and be just as sadistically crude as any Rob Zombie production, but on an indie budget. A budget with unlimited constraints when pinpointing a genre identity as “Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh” has the word play of a Giallo-like inspired title, even accompanied with masked antagonist armed with a switchblade in a complex plot, but also sharply pivots and dabbles heavily in subgenres such as the revenge thriller, the occult, and torture porn that engages a plot twist, after plot twist, after plot twist up until the very end.

Bill Gobin stars as Dominic and Gobin’s appearance and actions channel very similarly that of Michael Chiklis’ Vic Mackey from F/X’s hit cop drama “The Shield,” but with an important piece of Dominic missing to fully sell the performance. Dominic’s tender melancholy moments of his lost Lexie are to bring out the human side in a cold and stern tough guy, but Gobin lacks that rightful emotion, replacing the tearjerking moments with more of the icy blank stare used in just about ever other scene and to the point where Gobin just might smack his tears back into his tear ducts. Kendall (Kayla Crance) is the constant bittersweet thorn in Dominic’s life as the father and daughter are more like father versus daughter. Crance challenges Gobin very well, even overpowering him in select scenes, protruding a defiant brat without an inkling of remorse until bodies start to really pile high. While Dominic and Kendall are certainly scribed as emotionless mavericks, Stella (Angela Steel) brings us down to a more sensible and realistic character who grieves for her slain daughter with alcohol and depression while also rekindling a once extinguished flame in a surprising twist of events. The best character performance overall goes to Jim Dougherty as the local sheriff who can stand toe-to-toe with Dominic and spitfire insults between Dominic and Sheriff Rex scribed very well for the Indiana University studied actor. Rounding out the cast is Scott Ganyo, Rosalind Rubin, and Grant Niezgodski.

Perhaps a little too ambitious trying to compact a endless frontier, Grand Theft Auto world story into over two hours, clocking in at 142 minute runtime, that feels every minute of it. There’s, perhaps, too much going on here with the potluck genres and plot twists that once the apex of the story has finally been reached, the first acts take on a whole different significance that doesn’t build to the necessary resulting finale that ultimate defines Dominic who, in the beginning, starts off strong, a tough guy who doesn’t take crap from anyone and that’s including his rebellious daughter Kendall, but then flounders just after reaching the small town, interacting passively with his sister Stella and a few townies, to the point where Dominic is just an inquisitive visitor. Dominic’s purpose is the push, push, push the town folk into giving the answers he seeks, like Porter tracking down his share of the stolen money in “Payback;” instead, Dominic’s is the one being pushed to the point of breaking and, finally, then do we see the Dominic’s dark side and his particular skill set in torture and manipulation.

Unearthed Films and MVDVisual presents a not rated 2-disc DVD collector’s edition of Jakob Bilinski’s “Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh.” The 2014 Cinephreak production is display in widescreen, 1.78:1 aspect ratio, and the image quality above par with a clean picture composited with natural color tones and colorful filters to give some Giallo cinematography charm. The CGI bloodsplatter near the end is, well, CGI, but the run of the scene is fun and brutal that the generated pseudo-blood is used appropriately. The Dolby Digital 5.1 dishes out a well-balanced concoction of ambiance, soundtrack, and dialogue, with the dialogue being clean and clear even during more intense moments. Disc one contains the feature film with option audio commentary by writer-director Jakob Bilinksi and star-producer Bill Gobin. There’s also commentary by Cinematographer DP Bonnell along with Bilinski on the track. Disc two contains even more with a making of piece entitled “Peeling Back the Flesh,” 21 deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel, auditions, and Unearthed Films trailers. Under a stellar presentation within the plentiful content of a 2-disc set from Unearthed Films and MVDVisual, “Three Tears on Bloodstained Flesh” is certainly a “modern, Midwesternized spin on Giallo,” plus much, much more when considering the other genres that might have diluted the foul-mouthed scripted story and left the focus more fuddled, but happens to maintain a fun, semi-gory approach that can’t be argued.

American Horror Story: Freak Show… R.I.P Meep

American Horror Story: Freak Show
Season 4 Episode 2 “Massacres and Matinees”

Wow! What an entertaining episode this proved to be, improving largely on last weeks. First and foremost Twisty was back spooking the shit out of us all. His scenes are so tense, and they are just amplified to the maximum because of his unnerving silence. He swiftly claims another victim, Mr Hanley, who is found by his toy shop assistant in a very suspenseful manner. He follows a blood trail that he soon finds leads to the head of poor old Mr Hanley and upon doing so is added to Twistys’ collection of victims by means of a knife through the throat. This creepy incident is what spreads further fear across the town, enough to invoke a citywide curfew.

What the townsfolk are unaware of is that Twisty now occupies a partner. We’re introduced to the pompous new character Dandy Mott (Finn Wittrock). He is obsessed with being a thespian at the freak show but Jimmy Darling is strongly angered by this and warns him away. It’s now that Dandy storms off in a foul mood. His mood is soon brightened when his mother Gloria Mott (Frances Conroy) reveals she has purchased him his very own clown. Dandy invites the clown to pick a toy and whilst he is looking through them, Dandy makes the mistake of looking in the clowns’ bag. It contains the severed head from the earlier murdered toy store assistant. The clown knocks him unconscious and makes a quick escape. It is extremely predictable from this point that Dandy is going to team up with the clown. Firstly because we know Dandy has a dark side due to comments made by his Mother and maid. Secondly, we know the clown always kills his chosen victims. So it is no surprise that when Dandy finds a young girl running from the crazed clown, that instead of helping her, he picks her up and practically hands her over to the clown. We’ll be seeing more of this murderous duo next week.

New additions Dell Toledo (Michael Chiklis) and Desiree Dupree (Angela Bassett) joined the freaks as husband and wife. Or husband and husband… Dell is a strongman and Desiree is a full blown hermaphrodite with three boobs. From the get-go Dell is horrible to watch, trying to control the freaks and overpower Elsa Mars and her position. Elsa can see he is going to cause more harm than good but she is unaware he lied about the reason they fled to her show. The real reason being that his wife Desiree was pleasuring a normal townsman and Dell was certainly unhappy about this, so snapped his neck instantly. (Again, I wrongly assumed the townsfolk and freaks wouldn’t mix – but apparently freaks are very tempting and provocative).

Immediately there is bitterness between him and Ethel Darling (Kathy Bates) and we soon find out why. Ethel and Dell used to be an item and Jimmy Darling is their son. Only he doesn’t know. Oh, and he also doesn’t know that his father wanted to kill him when he was a baby because of his deformities. Now maybe subconsciously Jimmy knows how evil Dell really is because he takes an instant dislike to him and the two seem to start a war. This conflict eventually causes heartbreak and devastation amongst the freaks, and viewers alike. Jimmy tries to set Dell up so the police will cart him away for good, but it is not him we regrettably see go. Upon finding out he was being set-up, he stabbed at all of our heartstrings by alternatively setting innocent Meep up. No-one was expecting this, possibly the biggest and worst surprise we’ve seen so far. Meep was violently beaten to death but the full extent of his torture is left to our imagination as the final images we see are of Meep screaming frantically. It brought a tear to my eye and created a lump in my throat.
MEEP
The only thing to criticize is the fact that they are revealing a lot of the characters back stories extremely early into the show. Twisty the clown is proving to be the most chilling so far, with the freaks not especially enthralling to watch. Stayed tuned as next week we will finally be introduced to Maggie Esmerelda (Emma Roberts) who is unsurprisingly rumoured to beguile Jimmy Darling. I can also reveal Ethel will receive some “surprising” news in the next episode, which is titled: Edward Mordrake part 1. I hope this arouses your curiosities.

American Horror Story hit our screens after a largely anticipated return. We were quickly introduced to Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange) and the other characters. Jessica Lange performs brilliantly and it was a surprise to find out that she isn’t just fame-hungry. She’s paraplegic and fame-hungry. Evan Peters is back with lobster hands, playing Jimmy Darling. We meet the very likeable Bette and Dot Tattler (Sarah Paulson). The relationship between the two is funny and very entertaining to watch. We see Ma Petite played by Jyoti Amge, who is actually the smallest woman in the world – claiming a Guinness Book of World Records title. Providing the terror in the first episode, and possibly the title, is Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch). If killing an innocent couple isn’t enough, he also keeps two young children locked up and terrifies them to the point of torture. “There’s a big story that explains the clown and what he’s doing that’s based on an urban myth we uncovered” revealed director Ryan Murphey. It is the fourth season that will explain to us what we are eager to know about Twisty, so stay tuned.
Twisty the clown
Kathy Bates comes across far too tame playing the bearded lady. Her acting skills are capable of providing a more sinister and malicious character… but this could be exposed throughout the season. We will meet Angela Bassett next week who is Desiree Dupree, the three-breasted lady (and according to her a “full-blown hermaphrodite”). We are also yet to meet con artist Maggie Esmerelda (Emma Roberts) and strongman played by actor Michael Chiklis.

We know from the previous seasons to expect; brutality, rape, seduction, distressing scenes of violence, racism, discrimination and so on. Sensuality and seductiveness has always been a huge part of the show which has interested us, the mature audience, because of its candid approach. I have never had any issues with the previous scenes of this nature, sure I’ve been like “what the hell” during rape scenes but it’s never disgusted me to the point where I feel nauseous. That is until now. Prior to watching this episode I generally perceived that the freaks were ostracized from the “normal” townsfolk. I wrongly assumed that the freaks would be considered vermin, and that even making eye contact with one could result in receiving the cold shoulder from ordinary people living in the area. What I see instead is quite the opposite. In one scene Jimmy Darling, who has lobster hands, can be seen pleasuring regular women with his deformities. Women are literally lining up to pay for this. We see him moving his lobster hands towards the woman’s sex, leaving absolutely no room for doubt that he is prostituting his deformed hands. This left me feeling slightly bewildered more than anything because I just cannot believe that that many women, if any, would be sexually intrigued by this man with lobster-like hands. The moment of nausea smacked me in the face when we see Elsa Mars watching a video reel. A young woman enters threatening to expose all of the shenanigans happening behind the scenes at the freak show. It soon becomes clear that the young woman was willingly high on opium and whilst she was so, she took part in a sex orgy with the freaks. This is the most unsettling scene American Horror Story has offered us to date. Pepper getting excited like a child in the clip intensified my feeling of horror and I was left feeling utterly shocked. If the programme continues to show these depraved acts, which I’m sure they will, I’m not sure how much my stomach will be able to handle.

American Horror Story: Freak Show

amhsfsposter2

It’s back! “American Horror Story” returns on FX for its fourth season: Freak Show.

The first episode is expected to air on 8th October 2014 at 10pm. Hopefully we are provided with more gripping storylines like all the previous ones that we know and love. This season is set in 1952 and will follow a freak show trying to survive in Jupiter, Florida. Dark entities flood the town and both the outcasts and normal townsfolk must fight to survive the fearsome rush of darkness. Much loved favourites are back for our viewing pleasure; Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Naomi Grossman and Emma Roberts.

Slender man?

Slender man?

A two-headed woman, a strongman, a bearded lady, a fortune-teller, a three-breasted woman and a man with lobster hands are amongst some of the characters we will see. It is rumored that Slender Man may make an appearance and although this hasn’t been verified the Official Teaser #10 (see teaser below) backs this up. The video shows the legs of a tall man holding the hand of a little girl. His top half isn’t visible which intrigues us all the more. Slender Man is a mythical creature, inhumanely tall and skinny, who preys on little children. He is rumored to kidnap them but it remains a mystery as to what he does with them beyond this. If Slender Man and freaks isn’t enough, this season is also reported to feature a killer clown. Some people believe American Horror Story is mediocre, but most people are anticipating the return of the most suspenseful and nightmarish television show around. Don’t miss it!

The Thing joins American Horror Story: Freak Show!

Just a few days ago, the horror world received a message from Ryan Murphy that the four season of American Horror Story will be called Freak Show and will return previous cast members Jessica Lange (last season for her), Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, and Kathy Bates. Freak Show will revolve around a carnival setting with spooky clowns and carny hands.

Another actor has joined the AHS: Freak Show ranks and it is none other than Emmy Winner, The Shield bad cop, the Fantastic Four The Thing Michael Chiklis. Chiklis will be returning to television as Evan Peter’s characters dad and ex-husband to Cathy Bates.
