Is Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno Getting the Shaft?

greeninferno

Here’s some grade-A bullshit if I’ve ever heard so. The word on the street (Deadline) is that Eli Roth’s directorial feature “The Green Inferno” has been put on hold indefinitely by Open Road Films due to the fact that the company’s financier, Worldview Entertainment, is being tied up with an ex-CEO, Christopher Woodrow, decision to withhold any print and advertisement for the film.

Why hold the P&A?

Some sites suggest that the business end is causing a halt to the film’s September 5th release, but others, including myself, is that the film’s cannibalism subject matter has always been a taboo subject (think “Cannibal Holocaust’s” animal cruelty and has there really been a cannibal film that has had any note of success to it? Perhaps the Alexandre Aja remake of Wes Craven’s “The Hills Have Eyes”?).

“The Green Inferno” revolves around a group of activist who travel from New York City to the Amazon to save a dying, primitive tribe, but when their plane crashes in the jungle, they’re taken hostage by the very tribe they sought to save.

Marilyn Burns, lead scream queen actress in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre directed by Tobe Hooper, died on August 5th at the age of 65. She was “found unresponsive” at her home in Texas by her family members.

Burns landed the lead role in Hooper’s cult classic in 1974 while a student at University of Texas. She has also appeared in another Hooper film, Eaten Alive, and had some cameo roles in Future Kill, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.

Here’s a rumor from way out in left field. There seems to be talks between Sony and Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids”, to reboot “Ghostbusters” and have an all female, comedic cast.

No word on whether Ivan Reitman or Dan Aykroyd is in involved in this … project … but there are sources that are saying the script is being totally rewritten.

I’m not totally cool with an all woman cast for “Ghostbusters.” Sure, I was down for one or two roles going to a great cast of new ghostbusting characters, but for all female cast I’m just not feeling it. I also have a sneaking suspicion that Melissa McCarthy will be one of the ghostbusting foursome on the sole basis that she was in “Bridesmaids” and was also in another Feig film “The Heat.” We will have to see where this rumor takes us, but as far as the original cast coming together (sans Harold Ramis – RIP), I see this reboot becoming more of a reality than a sequel.

Rob Zombie’s Fan-Backed Film “31”

31-5

With a slew of film rumors ever since his last film project The Lords of Salem, from his involvement with a remake of The Blob (that never panned out) to his rumored long hiatus from making another film, Rob Zombie has become something of an enigma, but then again, that was always the super-rocker’s persona and style. Now, Mr. Zombie is back to doing another film, this time funded by a fan-backed project website entitled simply enough as FanBacked.com, called “31” that is described as being “a fast paced, mean dirty film for those who like it rough.” Most of Zombie’s films are fast paced, mean, and dirty and some even described his style as “white trash” with his archetypes of trailer trash, profanity filled characters. Thats how we like it, isn’t it? We all know what a Rob Zombie film feels and sounds like and we dig his style of filmmaking.
31-1
The synopsis of “31” involves five random people being kidnapped five days before Halloween and held hostage in a place called Murder World – a man-made hell of a structure where survival is the key as anything goes including, you guessed it, murder. The “contestants” have 12 hours to survive, from what I can tell by the concept art, clown masked clad killers and if the hostages survive, they’ll earn their freedom.
31-3
So far there have been numerous contributors. If you would like to contribute, there are different tier to which you can grab some swag for your contributions – a signed DVD copy, a “31” T-shirt, a limited edition “Halloween” mask – just to name a few. Check out the FanBacked.com site here and have a stake in the film. Lets see if you’re hard earned cash can make “31” a gorehound’s dream.

Toe Tagged: FEARnet

I’ve never been close to those who work for FEARnet, but I have always considered myself a colleague of theirs and visa-versa. And with the news that FEARnet will be closing up shop and no longer contributing to the horror community comes at a complete shock. The story goes that Comcast NBCUniversal bought out FEARnet in April of this year and since NBCUniversal already owns the rights to Syfy and Chiller TV channels, FEARnet was seen as a waste of redundant space.

Six years. That is how long FEARnet has brought horror to your computer and to your television. All the hard work from the employees and the contributors, most of whom have been laid off, is not for naught as we will continue to reminisce about each remarkable story that has been written about our favorite horror movies and icons.

Farewell FEARnet. You’re grave is waiting…RIP July 30th.
