Almost a year ago, do you remember the real life face-eating cannibal Rudy Eugene due to, unconfirmed, street drug nicknamed “bath salts?” Eugene basically left his disabled vehicle near a Miami causeway, stripped completely butt-ass naked, and assaulted one Ronald Poppo by beating him down to the ground, stripping off his homeless man trousers, and proceeding to munch on the upper portion of his face. A real life zombie? Most likely not, but the more probably cause would be high as a kite on drugs, making him insane and almost superhuman-like. Reportedly, the attack went on for nearly 20 minutes and police even shot Eugene four times.

A year later, ambitious filmmakers came together with the “Miami Zombie” inspiration in mind and made a highly exaggerated, or was it, loosely based film about drug addicts turning into face biting zombies after smoking a bath salt resembler that is actually concocted from a highly toxic, military grade, weaponized substance that somehow mysteriously disappeared from the military’s inventory. Hot on the destructive addict’s tail is a relentless DEA agent who will stop at nothing to put an end to reign of bath salt terror!

Who are these ambitious filmmakers? And how the hell did they pull off a great fun and creative movie about the bath salt “Miami Zombie?” First off, the team of creators and actors behind that fantastic little Faustian film Night of the Tentacles were involved! Dustin Wayde Mills, whom very uncanny in looks and voice resembles Red State director Kevin Smith, directs, co-wrote, and also co-stars as the money hungry mad scientist behind the bath salt concoction. Night of the Tentacles lead man Brandon Salkil who is comically animated and has great facial features for film. Secondly, my main man Clint Weiler produced and co-wrote Bath Salt Zombies. Clint is also a head hancho over at MVD, a major home entertainment distributor for music and DVD video!

Bath Salt Zombies combines 300 with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. You have the epic fight scenes, done very well by the way with well done choreographs by co-star Jason Eal (DEA agent), with the Scott Pilgrim like animations that turn a cheesy premises into the next big indie cult film – the next Dead Next Door comes to mind. Now, I could be wrong, but I found that Bath Salt Zombies paid homage to a couple of other notable horror and action icons such as the first Resident Evil video game in the mini-cartoon intro at the beginning reminded me of first appearance of a zombie and the subway fight finale reminded me of Neo and Agent Smith duking it out in the first Matrix. However, Bath Salt Zombies delivers more blood and more creative style with the budget.

What I really wanted more from this film was Erin R. Ryan’s twins in the shower. Along with Ryan’s ta tas, Bath Salt Zombies offers other perks such as a fully frontal 4 minute scene of DeviantArt and Model Mayhem model Bella Demente! You also have a great punk Soundtrack to go along with the spew of blood, the elastic internal organs, the dismembered body parts, and the multiple decapitations. I highly recommend this movie to any comedy, horror, or drug addict fan because Bath Salt Zombies entertains with a blood, boobs and banter that hasn’t been this witty for a indie film in such a long, long time! Well played!

Tod Williams Will Direct the Evil Signal for Cell!

Damn.  I remember when the first news broke three years ago (maybe four) about the Stephen King’s Cell was being adapted into a movie and Eli Roth was attached in some way or another (the freakin’ guy writes, produces, directs, stars, etc…).  Since then, a lot has happened and Eli Roth is no longer attached.  The latest and still withholding news is that John Cusack will star and Stephen King will penn the project with The Last House on the Left writer Adam Alleca.  More news has been released today by Screen Daily that Tod Williams will set in the directors chair.  Williams is best know for his work on Paranormal Activity 2…that is basically all Williams is known for.

But I’m excited to see Cell is moving forward.  I’ve read King’s book and enjoyed it all through the intensity and outrageousness that characters Clayton Riddell and Tom McCourt had to go through.  Comic book artist Clayton Riddell is in the middle of a devastated Boston as a cell signal has turned people into homicidal manics and using telepathy to communicate amongst each other as a whole.  Riddell joins forces with another survivor Tom McCourt and the two set off toward New England in hopes that Clayton’s son is still alive.

John Cusack will most certainly play Clayton – I can envision Cusack as a comic book artist and as Clayton Riddell, a sort of a nobody who can take charge of a situation, but I wonder who will play McCourt because I always envisioned McCourt as a little broader Kip from Napoleon Dynamite.  Shooting begins in May with Cargo Entertainment producing!

Kevin Bacon and the Evil Cult! The Following (Ep. 3 review)

The Following is the new hit horror thriller that audiences can’t get enough of and I see why!  With every twist in the story, the anticipation grows until you find yourself on the edge of the soft, neck arched toward the screen, and your mind with racing with what will happen next?  Episode three had a couple of betrayal, a couple of big deaths (already!) and another couple of the homosexual kind.  Every character is likable because every character has an interesting disposition about themselves.

In this episode, Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and his Debra Parker (Annie Parisse) find that being duped sucks and can cost lives.  With these two main characters on the fence about who to trust, who can the audience trust?  I still don’t trust Debra Parker nor do I trust golden boy FBI agent Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore).  There something about these two characters that seems off, but this could be the result of the way the story is unfolding and perhaps intentional by the writers to have the audience second guessing your judgement.  The jury is still deliberating on these two.

I’m craving to see more of Joel Matthews son, Joey Matthews, being taught how to kill by starting with animals.  The ultimate Charles Darwin theory – nature versus nurture.  Will Kevin Williamson play on that and see if nurture over comes nature because Joey is an innocent kind with his action figures and his affection for mom, but his kidnappers are teaching him that death is okay, that you should embrace death and treat death as a constant reminder of how precious our lives are to ourselves.  My gut feeling is yelling at me telling me that Joey’s mother Claire will be more than just a bystander and will go to the extreme in finding her boy.  After years of watching horror and thriller movies, I’ve come to the conclusion that I have years of experience in deciphering what might happen next.  This sounds a bit presumptuous on my part, but one can only speculate on how the writers will take this series.

The fake gay couple next door to Joey’s first victim Sarah on in the first episode are actually, and secretly, hot for each other creating turmoil and deceptiveness among the three homicidal individuals.  When you mix in a menage a trois with killer instincts, you have a recipe for a good episode next Monday night!  Until then, keep watching!
